A Tasmanian Government and Community Partnership
The Bothwell Wellness Group’s Connecting our isolated community through physical activity initiative aims to improve support and opportunities for physical activity in the local community. Through holding weekly fitness classes, community members have been encouraged to increase their commitment to physical exercise by engaging in organised classes both within and outside the community.
A survey of 14 participants in the fitness class showed improvements in balance, strength, flexibility and overall fitness. Twenty per cent now participate in other forms of regular exercise such as daily walking, running or bike riding and have also reported an improvement in their general wellbeing. Some participants are now also joining other fitness providers, due to increased fitness and the desire to move on to harder exercise programs to support their fitness goals.
Bothwell Wellness Group has also received a grant from the Department of Premier and Cabinet to promote additional physical and mental wellbeing in the community and for training purposes.
